Cover work area with newspaper or scrap sheets of paper. Fill in any cracks, nail holes or gouges with wood putty stick. Sand entire bench to eliminate rough edges and surfaces. Brush dust from surface. Paint entire bench with one coat of maroon paint. Allow to dry thoroughly. Measure length and width of bench seat. Divide width by 8, and length by 3 (These numbers determine how many rows (3) and columns (8) for the checkerboard. If you wish to have larger or smaller squares on the checkered finish on the seat, adjust accordingly - just make sure all squares measure the same size). Once you've figured out how wide each column should be, lay ruler across seat, then measure and mark at each spot where a line should be drawn to mark off columns. Lightly draw pencil lines to mark where each column should end. Repeat process for creating row lines.
Using the fine tip paint brush, begin painting squares in a checkerboard fashion, alternating forest green and raw linen colors.
