But let yourself be swayed by low price or looks alone, and you could land a lemon that wobbles, cracks and is too flimsy to be repaired. Locally and nationally, complaints about furniture have been on the rise in the last five years, and dining tables are no exception. The most frequent complaints involve wobbling, especially with pedestal tables, says Cherie Reese, vice president of the Better Business Bureau of Greater Kansas City.Local refinishers say many tables manufactured today can’t be refinished: Veneers are so thin the tiniest dings or chips expose the underlying substrate.

The good news is, telling a good table from a bad one isn’t rocket science. The differences are easy to see if you take the time to shop around.Start by looking at top-of-the-line tables at interior design showrooms, recommends Jim Santilli, owner of Kansas City Upholstery. Experiencing excellent craftsmanship close-up will make it easier to evaluate the quality of more affordable tables. At the very high and very low ends of the price spectrum, quality is predictable.

It senses people's presence, then gradually changes colour accordingly.

The interactive set, which could be in shops, airports, museums, or bars within a year or two, uses technology to extend people's emotional state into a room that may be devoid of ancient ideas."We want modern people like us to remember that there was an interaction between people and furniture," says Ichi Kanaya, assistant professor at Osaka University.In a typical scenario, a person might walk into a room furnished with fuwa pica. He or she might place a memento or favorite item, let's say a blue vase, on the table and sit on one of the chairs. Gradually the chairs begin to change from white to blue.

Expenditure for office furniture criticized

The city of Thousand Oaks has set aside $375,000 to buy new office furniture, but the idea isn't sitting well with critics.
City Councilwoman Claudia Bill-de la Pena said she is unhappy about the decision to allot so much money for furniture that she describes as "top of the line."

According to city officials, the furniture will be needed at City Hall, the Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park libraries and the city's Hill Canyon Wastewater Treatment Plant. It will be requested on an as-needed basis, and no single project will exceed $30,000, according to city staff. The city is awarding three-year contracts to Los Angeles-based Purchase Planners Group and Calabasas-based McAllister Office Pavilion, authorized dealers and installers for Haworth Office Furniture and Herman Miller Office Furniture. The city's finance director, Candace Hong, told the City Council on Tuesday that the decision had been made to continue with Haworth and Herman Miller because they were the brands decided upon 15 years ago when the city occupied the new Civic Arts Plaza."We're only doing small module changes, and it makes more sense to go back and re-use the pieces that you've got, plus buy any additional amount you need from the manufacturer we've been using," Hong said. "It's more cost efficient."
